Comparing the two honestly
Neither route is “harder” in a technical sense — Kilimanjaro’s difficulty comes overwhelmingly from altitude rather than terrain, and both routes involve similar total elevation gain to the summit via the Barafu or Karanga approach. The real differences come down to crowds, duration and cost, scenery, and group size on the trail at busy periods.
Which should you pick?
If budget and time are tight, Machame at 7 days remains an excellent, proven choice. If you have slightly more flexibility and solitude matters to you, Lemosho is often worth the extra day and cost.
There’s no universally “better” route — only the one that better matches what you’re looking for. Send us your travel dates, budget, and what matters most to you, and we’ll recommend honestly — not just the route we book most often.
