Marangu Route

Marangu Route

OVERVIEW

The only main route with hut accommodation instead of tents and the most direct line to the summit, which is also its main risk. Climbers who add the 6th day for extra acclimatization see success rates jump considerably compared with the faster 5-day version.

What makes this route stand out

  • The only route with permanent hut accommodation, not tents
  • A more direct, faster ascent profile than the other routes
  • Good infrastructure and well-marked trail throughout
  • The same path is used for both ascent and descent

day by day

Full itinerary

Register at Marangu Gate and climb steadily through lush rainforest on a well-maintained trail to Mandara, where you’ll sleep in simple A-frame huts rather than a tent.

Leave the forest for open moorland, with heather, giant groundsel and – on a clear day – your first proper view of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

An optional but strongly recommended rest day, often used for a short acclimatisation hike toward Zebra Rocks or the Mawenzi saddle before returning to Horombo to sleep.

Cross the high-altitude ‘saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo, a stark, otherworldly alpine desert landscape, arriving at Kibo Hut for an early dinner and rest before the summit push.

A midnight start climbing scree switchbacks to Gillman’s Point, then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After summiting, descend all the way back down to Horombo Hut.

A long but easy final descent back through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate, where summit certificates are presented.
