6-Day Northern Tanzania Safari

Your Tanzanian adventure begins the moment you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). After completing the arrival formalities, your friendly private Safari Quest guide will meet you at the airport and warmly welcome you to Tanzania. From the airport, you will enjoy a comfortable transfer to Arusha, the gateway to Tanzania’s famous Northern Safari Circuit. As you travel toward Arusha, you will begin to see the beautiful landscapes of northern Tanzania, with Mount Meru dominating the horizon on a clear day.

Once you arrive at your hotel, you will have time to check in, relax and recover from your journey. Depending on your arrival time, you may simply enjoy the hotel facilities or take a short walk around the area. In the evening, your safari guide will meet you for a briefing about the adventure ahead, including the parks you will visit, what wildlife you can expect to encounter and what to bring with you during the game drives. This is also an opportunity to discuss the safari with your guide and ask any questions before your first day in the wilderness. After dinner, you will spend the night in Arusha, ready for the safari to begin the following morning.

After breakfast, your safari adventure officially begins as your private guide collects you from your hotel in Arusha. You will leave the city behind and travel through the beautiful countryside toward Tarangire National Park, one of northern Tanzania’s most distinctive wildlife areas. As you approach the park, the scenery gradually changes into open savannah dotted with enormous ancient baobab trees.

After entering through the Tarangire Main Gate, your game drive begins. Tarangire is particularly famous for its large elephant population, and it is common to encounter elephant families moving between the trees, drinking at the Tarangire River or feeding alongside the road. The park is also home to zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, buffalo, impala, warthogs and many other species. With some luck, you may also encounter lions and other predators watching the herds from a distance.

As the day continues, your guide will take you through different habitats in search of wildlife. The Tarangire River is especially important because water attracts animals from different parts of the ecosystem, particularly during the dry season. You will stop at a designated picnic area for lunch before continuing your afternoon game drive. Later in the afternoon, you will leave the park and continue toward your accommodation for dinner and a relaxing evening surrounded by the atmosphere of the African wilderness.

After breakfast, you will leave Tarangire behind and begin one of the most scenic journeys of your safari. Your route takes you toward the Ngorongoro highlands and onward to the legendary Serengeti National Park. Along the way, the landscape changes dramatically, from the dry savannah and baobabs of Tarangire to higher, cooler landscapes and eventually the enormous open plains of the Serengeti.

Depending on the route and timing, you may pass through areas where you can see local communities, farmland and traditional Maasai settlements. Your guide will help you understand how people, livestock and wildlife share this remarkable landscape. You will then continue toward the Serengeti, with opportunities to begin seeing wildlife even before reaching the main park areas.

Once you pass through the gate, the feeling of the safari changes completely. The horizon seems to stretch endlessly, and you may begin seeing large herds of wildebeest, big cats and zebra moving across the grasslands. The Serengeti is particularly famous for its enormous wildlife populations and the Great Migration, while lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hyenas and many other species can also be encountered.

Your afternoon becomes a game drive as you continue toward your lodge or tented camp. Rather than simply driving directly to your accommodation, your guide will take advantage of wildlife opportunities along the route. As the sun begins to lower over the plains, the golden Serengeti scenery creates one of the most memorable photographic moments of the safari. You will arrive at your accommodation in the evening, enjoy dinner and settle in for your first night in the Serengeti.

Today is dedicated entirely to discovering the Serengeti. You will wake early, have breakfast and set out with your guide for a morning game drive when wildlife activity is often excellent. The cool morning air and soft light provide wonderful conditions for photography as you search the plains for animals beginning their day.

The Serengeti offers the possibility of seeing an extraordinary range of wildlife. You may encounter huge herds of wildebeest and zebra, graceful giraffes, buffaloes, elephants and numerous antelope species. The big cats are among the most exciting animals to look for, and your experienced guide will use tracks, animal behaviors and knowledge of the area to help locate lions, cheetahs and, with some luck, the more elusive leopard. Hyenas and jackals may also be seen moving through the plains. The unpredictability is part of what makes a safari special, witnessing nature as it happens. During the day, you may stop at a designated picnic location for lunch before continuing your exploration.

Depending on the season and the animals’ movements, your experience can be very different from one visit to another. During periods of the Great Migration, large concentrations of wildebeest and zebra may dominate particular areas, while other seasons can offer excellent opportunities for predators and resident wildlife. Tanzania’s tourism information specifically highlights the changing migration pattern and the relationship between migrating herbivores and predators.

In the late afternoon, you will slowly make your way back toward your accommodation. As evening approaches, the Serengeti becomes quiet and peaceful, with the sounds of nature replacing the activity of the daytime. After dinner, you will relax at your lodge or camp and enjoy another night surrounded by the wilderness.

After breakfast, you will begin your final Serengeti game drive before heading toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Your morning drive gives you another opportunity to encounter wildlife, and your guide will make stops whenever there is something interesting to observe. This journey is not simply a transfer between two destinations, it is part of the safari experience. You may see wildlife along the way and depending on your route, pass through fascinating landscapes associated with human history and conservation.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is particularly special because wildlife conservation exists alongside human communities and cultural landscapes. The area contains wetlands, woodlands, grasslands, migration routes and other habitats that support a wide range of wildlife.

You will continue toward your accommodation near the Ngorongoro Crater. As you reach the highlands, the cooler climate and dramatic scenery provide a striking contrast to the Serengeti plains. If time allows, you may enjoy views around the crater rim or simply relax at the lodge. Dinner will be served at your accommodation, followed by an early night because tomorrow brings one of the greatest highlights of the safari.

Today begins early because you are heading into the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater. After breakfast, your safari vehicle will descend into the crater for a game drive through one of Tanzania’s most remarkable wildlife landscapes.

As you descend, the view opens dramatically below you, revealing grasslands, woodland, wetlands and wildlife spread across the crater floor. The crater is famous for its exceptionally high concentration of wildlife, and you may encounter different species. One of the most exciting possibilities is spotting the endangered black rhinoceros, although sightings are never guaranteed. The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact and unfilled volcanic caldera and notes its concentration of wildlife, including the Big Five.

Your guide will take you around different areas of the crater while explaining the animals and the unique environment around you. You may stop for a picnic lunch at an approved location before continuing your game drive. After several unforgettable hours inside the crater, you will ascend back to the rim and begin your journey toward Arusha.

As you drive back, you will have time to reflect on the experiences of the past few days from the elephants of Tarangire and the endless Serengeti plains to the spectacular crater. You will arrive in Arusha later in the afternoon or evening, depending on the day’s activities.

If your international flight is scheduled for a later evening departure and the timing is suitable, your guide can transfer you onward to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Otherwise, you can spend your final night in Arusha and depart the following day.
